With the prototype housing (2005-Desert Hot Springs, California), Marmol Radziner and Associates ventured into a new type of prefabricated modular house, a great example of elegant architecture, which they called the Desert House. Although the original intention was never to make prefabricated houses it turns out that this is a great way to produce high-quality modern housing.
The Desert House has four housing modules and six decks, arranged for enjoying the desert landscape, with open air areas but it protected from solar radiation by the deck covers, creating a suggestive and original mix of lifestyle, while connecting it to the guest house and studio in the north wing. The whole plans organizing just as an “L “. Altogether have 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, with a floor area of 190m2.
Desert House is powered with 100% solar energy panels, but well protected in south and west sides of the harsh summer sun. In the winter months, its concrete flooring will bring a passive gain of solar heat, making it more sustainable. It has triple glazed windows, recyclable materials (including structural steel), and low VOC paints.
The facilities are already pre-assembled, only thing to do is connect to the utility, and then the modules are welded and screwed. The construction of this house needed a total of seven months, four for the preparation of the site and the foundation, and three to complete after the installation. At the site of Marmol Radziner can see more pictures of their construction process.
